Professor Diao Daming, a researcher at the National Academy of Development and Strategy of Renmin University of China and a professor at the School of International Studies, published an article in Guangming Daily titled “China and the United States Should Continue Exploring Ways for Major Powers to Coexist Properly”. The key points of the article are as follows:

The article highlights the significant importance of Sino-US relations and analyzes the proper direction for their future interactions. In recent years, President Xi Jinping and President Joe Biden have met multiple times, including the recent meeting in San Francisco, providing critical guidance for the stable development of Sino-US relations. Both leaders reaffirmed their consensus on the guiding principles of bilateral relations and expressed their shared desire to achieve a smooth transition through dialogue and cooperation, injecting more certainty into a turbulent international landscape.

The article underscores China’s articulation of the “Four Unchanged Aspects,” which clarify the goals, principles, positions, and aspirations regarding Sino-US relations. First, the goal of maintaining stable, healthy, and sustainable Sino-US relations remains unchanged. As the world’s two largest economies, their relationship is vital for global peace and prosperity; cooperation benefits both, while confrontation harms both. Second, the principle of “mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation” remains unchanged. These three principles serve as the cornerstone of Sino-US relations in the new era, forming the fundamental approach to preventing conflict and fostering collaboration.

Simultaneously, China’s firm stance on safeguarding its sovereignty, security, and development interests remains unchanged. China reiterated that the Taiwan question is a red line, identifying misunderstandings and misguided policies by the U.S. as the root causes of friction between the two countries. China emphasized its commitment to defending its core interests and counteracting inappropriate U.S. actions on an equal footing. Furthermore, the aspiration to sustain traditional friendship between the Chinese and American peoples remains unchanged. Exchanges and cooperation between the two peoples have consistently served as stabilizing factors in bilateral relations. China calls on both sides to strengthen people-to-people interactions, enhance mutual understanding, and eliminate artificial disruptions.

Lastly, the article summarizes the development experience of Sino-US relations, noting that the two sides have reached certain consensus in multiple areas, including mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and cooperation to address global challenges. Moving forward, China and the U.S. should build on this foundation to continue exploring proper ways for the two major powers to coexist in the new era, jointly promoting world peace and prosperity.
