The 11th Issue of Policy Briefing, NADS: Election of Trump Posed Great Challenge to China

In the just concluded American presidential election, billionaire Donald John Trump was elected to be America’s 45th president. Many Chinese people are optimistic about this result and believe Trump will provide a broader international space for China’s rise. But, in fact, with Trump being a shrewd merchant who also craves to rebuild America’s manufacturing industry, China will encounter some unprecedented challenges. Section one of this article mainly analyzes the real meanings of Trump’s two campaign slogans-“Make America Great Again” and “America First”. Section two analyzes Trump. Section three mainly analyzes the 2 possible challenges posed by Trump’s presidency. One is economic challenge as foreign trade protectionism and domestic neoliberalism policies will strike China pretty hard. The other is geopolitical challenge. Trump is very likely to mobilize China’s geopolitical power to contain China and produce instabilities to China. We should be clearly aware that under the ruling philosophy of “America First”, Trump is highly likely to more effectively utilize America’s current super power status and use various non-conventional measures to change rules of the game so as to drive capitals back to America and rebuild its domestic and international political and economic layouts. In this regard, China must study countermeasures as soon.
