CNIA Introduction

Centre For New Inclusive Asia (CNIA) (http://www.cnia.com.my) is a non-government Malaysian think tank focusing on the studies of the new dynamics of Asia brought about by the rise of China. The New Inclusive Asia Dialogue held every year by CNIA intends to serve as a bridge to promote better understandings inter and intra Asia, and between the New Asia and the World.

Abstract  

From “crossing the river by feeling the stones” to “moving closer to the center of the world stage”, China has made marvelous achievements since the reform and opening-up 40 years ago. In 2013, President Xi Jinping proposed the Belt and Road Initiative to promote building a community of shared future for mankind, adhering to the Silk Road spirit of“peace and cooperation, openness and inclusiveness, mutual learning and mutual benefit”, the principle of “extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits”, and the basic value of seeking harmony in diversified civilizations.

China has adhered to its own development path and broke the myth that economic development must follow the Western model, providing an example for developing countries. However, it is viewed by the United States as an unacceptable challenge to the world system and universal values led by the West nowadays, and it must be contained. The US national security strategy views China as “Revisionist Power” and believes that China’s rise will inevitably harm the long-term interests of the United States. Therefore, it launched the 21st Century Technology Opium War and adopted the “Economic Gunboat Policy” to suppress China in fields of trade, technology, talent and finance. Will China and the United States fall into the “Thucydides’s Trap” because of the rise of China? Or is the United States itself caught in an inextricable “Displacement Anxiety”?

This lecture will explore how to grasp the opportunity brought by the Belt and Road, how to adhere to the spirit of the Silk Road, and how to establish a new era of global order with the principle of the Belt and Road. Koh King Kee will explain the Sino-US relationship and the storytelling method of Chinese story from the perspective of overseas Chinese.

Speaker’s profile

Koh King Kee is the president of Centre For New Inclusive Asia (CNIA), the director of the Belt and Road Business Center at Malaysia Tianzhi Consulting Co., Ltd., and the former director of the Central Research Office of Malaysian Justice Party. Koh King Kee graduated from the Department of Economics of the University of Malaya and holds a Master’s degree of Business Administration of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has extensive contacts with the International Belt and Road think tanks and academic institutions, and was invited as one of the keynote speakers of the inaugural meeting of the Belt and Road International Think Tank Cooperation Committee in April this year. As an overseas Chinese, Koh King Kee actively promotes the Belt and Road Initiative, and is the contributor of the popular Twitter account “Belt and Road”. Koh King Kee is also a special author of China Focus, a new project from the China International Publishing Group (CIPG), and has received interviews from domestic and foreign media about the Belt and Road Initiative, including Reuters, China Daily, South China Morning Post, China Business News, China International Radio. Radio, etc.
