Application of Big Data in Urban Planning and Management

Abstract:

As China expedites and deepens its urbanization, the traditional mode of urban planning and management requires transformation and improvement, in which process opportunities and challenges will rise along with the application of big data and smart city. As a typical big data, mobile signaling data can be widely used in analysis of urban planning and management. This research discusses spatial distribution of urban population and job-housing relations in different urban functional zones through a combination of mobile signaling data analysis and scenario simulation using urban models. The results can serve policymaking in terms of improving urban spatial structure and urban transportation efficiency.

Speaker Profile:

Studying at Lab of Interdisciplinary Spatial Analysis, Department of Land Economy, Cambridge University, Dr. XIAO Chaowei is a member of Royal Institute of British Architects and The Geographical Society of China, also chief editor at international station of Urban Planning International. He also served as secretary general at Chinese Students and Scholars Association in Cambridge. His main research fields include big data and urban planning and management and the “Belt and Road” infrastructure construction. Dr. XIAO published many SSCI and CSSCI academic papers in related fields. He is also well experienced in urbanization and regional development, urban strategical planning, low-carbon ecological development and other aspects. He worked at UNDP, China Development Bank, ARUP, as well as domestic and foreign projects such as West-Cambridge development plan, 2040 Shanghai city planning, ecology planning of Taihu New Town, Wuxi and Taicang garden city planning.
