On September 10 (local time), the First China-Latin America Human Rights Roundtable was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This event marked the first institutionalized exchange and dialogue on human rights between China and the Latin American and Caribbean region. Following the conclusion of the meeting, Wang Yi, Vice President of Renmin University of China, was interviewed by a China News Service reporter.
Regarding the achievements of the inaugural China-Latin America Human Rights Roundtable, Wang Yi stated that the conference not only met but exceeded its initial objectives, delivering results beyond expectations. Over the course of nearly ten hours of discussions, participants from China, Latin America, and the Caribbean recognized many shared perspectives in the realm of human rights, with a profound understanding that the right to survival and the right to development are fundamental human rights. In addition, participants from Latin America and the Caribbean highly commended China’s development-driven approach to advancing and safeguarding human rights, paying close attention to its human rights development model.
Wang Yi emphasized that for China, Latin America, the Caribbean, and other developing countries, there has long been a lack of initiative and discourse power in shaping their own human rights theories and development histories. This roundtable represents a significant starting point, symbolizing the beginning of joint efforts between China, Latin America, and the Caribbean to write their own human rights history.
